collecting the ingredients..

Today I have been to 'Kasteel ter Horst' to buy the wood that I'm going to use for the bass-viol.
I've chosen a piece of walnut.
It's large enough to build a whole family of instruments. (The wood is sold by piece at a very reasonable price.)
The original (tenor) instrument was made of maple. Walnut seems a nice choice for a larger instrument.

While I was away for the wood te postman delivered the set of drawings that

Ernic ordered for me at the 'Kunsthistoriches Museum' in Vienna.
Not only the drawing of the tenor by Francesco Linarol (SAM 66). Ernic ordered the drawings of a tenor- and bass-viol by Antonio Ciciliano as well.
I will consult those for the construction details and they are valuable as a pair to look at the proportions of the bass vs. tenor instrument.
The first job at hand will be to enlarge the tenor-drawing to the required size for the bass-viol.

Hello Waling,
The link to the "Kunsthistorisches Museum" in Vienna is no longer working. I can't find any reference on how to order plans on the http://www.khm.at site, nor on other places in the internet.
A friend of mine is planning to make me a similar (Linarol SAM 66) bass version of this viol. Your blog is very interesting because of all the practical info and your instrument looks and sounds very nice.
If you have some additional info on how to obtain a building plan, that would be very much apreciated.
Best regards and succes with your current and futur projects,
Xa4

Mine were ordered at the museum by a a friend of mine visiting the museum.

You could try to contact the curator of the collection. The contactinfo can be found at
http://www.khm.at/en/collections/collection-of-ancient-musical-instruments/curatorial-staff/

If your friend is actually building one it would be nice to keep in touch.

Good luck

Waling

Thanks for the info, Waling. Ordering a plan at the Vienna museum by e-mail was not that straightforward though. It's best to contact ilse.jung(at)khm.at directly; price was 52,80 euro, shipping to Belgium and VAT included. I'll keep you posted about further developments.
